Abstract

Women were not invited to Krewes or participation at all during early celebrations.  Present day celebrations place women at the forefront of the celebration in many ways. It is important to see how women utilize both the opportunity for expressions of freedom they may not have in day to day life and also as means to social power and financial success with commodification of this cultural celebration.

Similarities can be seen in Carnival culture where women dress provocatively and outrageously, the opposite of their daily practice.  Variance in type of participation among socio-economic class becomes evident as well among celebrants.
